Collaborative Learning around the World:
Relationships and Conversations that Make a Difference in Supervision, Teaching and Training

In connection with the International Summer Institute and Pre-ISI Workshops

Hotel Las Palapas
Playa del Carmen, Mexico
June 20-26, 2009

The International Certificate-Laboratory Program is offered in response to the growing number of practitioners who are interested in supervising, teaching and training from a postmodern collaborative perspective. The aim of the "Laboratory" is to create a forum that provides participants with an intensive, in-depth study and experience of the creation of a collaborative learning community and the facilitation of a collaborative learning process that are harmonious with the theoretical and philosophical postmodern/social construction assumptions on which collaborative practice is based. The Laboratory is designed for experienced, new and potential supervisors, teachers and trainers in various agency, university, community and private contexts.

Laboratory members will participate in the pre-ISI and the ISI and will have special assignments related to collaborative learning communities and processes. In addition to the assignments, there will be three meetings of the laboratory members and the facilitators. Members will also receive a detailed agenda, handouts and reading materials. There will plenty opportunity for discussions, questions and exchanges of ideas and practices.

Assignments will include:

-Observation of teaching, consultation and facilitation styles during the pre-ISI and ISI.
-Observation of one of the tutorials held during the ISI for university students.
-One interview of a supervisor/trainer in the Laboratory.

Specific focus will be on:

-Characteristics of a collaborative learning community
-The supervisor/teacher/trainer's "way of being" or "walking the talk"
-Setting the stage for, facilitating and maintaining a collaborative learning community
-Mutual evaluation or "valuing" of the learning process
-Experiential activities that facilitate collaborative learning
-Review of various supervision/education/training contexts and settings
-Collaborative learning communities in tradtional, hierarchically organized systems
